Everything has gone high tech these days, including motorcycle grips. Not so long ago, grips were just simple pieces of rubber with varying molded patterns to provide grip. The new breed of grips feature complex new materials and density mixtures making them a much stronger, more comfortable product that tears less in a crash while providing superior dampening that they even help reduce fatigue and blisters. One such high-tech grip that is quite effective is the Pillow Top grips from Pro Taper.
The green flag
Pro Taper Pillow Top grips are made with 3-D tri-density technology that Pro taper calls Vibrasonix synergy. Starting with the anti-rip tip, Pro Taper formulated a denser material so tough that it resists abrasion and tears. This area generally suffers the most in a spill so Pro Taper was wise to add the most durable layer of compound density here thus increasing the life of the grip. The top layer of the grip is the specially designed super soft pillow top compound. This compound acts as a dampener and practically eliminates vibration. Not only is the pillow top compound super comfortable, but it seems to grip the hand back giving a very secure feel to the rider. The last of the three layers is the special material in the inner core designed to grip the bars and this perfects the bonding interface grabbing the bars like a vice. This inner gripping core adds to the overall secure feel of the grips without the hard or harshness of harder single density grips. The Pillow Top grips felt super comfortable, reduced vibration and helped minimize blisters yet still gave us solid secure feel.
The yellow flag
I prefer thin grips over larger grips so I was initially skeptical and would have been reluctant to try them based on this misconception had I not tested them for this article. I found the Pillow Top grips to be comfortable without the feel of excessive rubber. The grip was soft, but the feel was secure which is important to me. After running that track with the Pro Taper Pillow Top’s I quickly understood why a majority of the professional riders favor them. There’s really no caution flag to be waved here other then don’t be afraid to try a pair.
